Fortescue Cuming published Sketches in 1810. Charity Rotch must have read at least portions of it prior to her own trip west in 1811, as she makes reference to Cuming in her travel journal. Rotch followed the same route as Cuming, and his book is an invaluable complement to understanding her experience.
